Journaling is a very powerful self-improvement free tool that anyone can use.
It can be very beneficial to our mental health, especially when we are feeling depressed, anxious, feeling stuck or stressed. Why is this so beneficial? Because we can write freely, without any constrictions or judgments and therefore we can figure out our emotions, what we are feeling, and why. When we get a picture of our inner landscape, we can start to move beyond. In this sense journal is actually a therapeutic tool, that heals and empowers. With journaling, you will be able to better know yourself. This understanding is gold!
What is journraling
Journaling is a tool to get to our emotions. It does mean writing essentially, either ina notepad or to an app or online journal. Sometimes we think, that we are expressing our emotions freely, but often we are pushing them down, we are not able to deal with them at the moment. This occurs especially when some harsh or upsetting events occur in our lives. Sometimes we don’t take time to reflect or to process our feelings because the busy life goes on. Writing allows us to express that, to go deeper, and to unravel sometimes hidden truth that we were unable to face or see before. You can call journaling expressive writing as well, expressing meaning, that we are expressing our emotions.
Journaling vs. keeping a diary
Ina diary we write down the events that happen on that day, writing is not so organized as journaling is. In journaling you often start with journaling prompts, questions, or exercises to help and guide us through the process.
Even though we can write about our emotions in a diary, besides the events that happened, in journaling, we tend to analyze it more frequently, sometimes with the help of a coach.
When we journal we are more focused on milestones and goals we want to reach, in keeping a diary this is not the case.
Why do you need to start a journal?
There are many benefits of starting a journal and I like the oldfashioned way the most. This means writing on paper, with your own handwriting, because this physical act itself is soothing and comforting, and in my opinion, it is also more powerful as well. With writing you connect both hemispheres of the brain, you ground yourself more and you can focus easier. Along with the mental and emotional benefits, this is a tool that can transform your life.
