Essentials for meditation

I tried to form a good habit of meditation for a long time. And during that time I noticed, I am having some problems with some aspects of meditation. Maybe you get used to some things in a while, but at the beginning, problems can be a deal-breaker in forming a habit. That is why I gathered all my essentials for meditation practice, which will help you make things easier. They are not a live or die essentials, but to me, they make a huge difference.

The best products that can help with meditation

Here are my best picks, that made a difference to me. I would like to point out, that for meditation it is not necessary to buy anything, maybe you can use some things you already have at home.

Problem: uncomfortable sitting

For me, the biggest issue I had with meditation was sitting comfortably. After a few minutes I started to get uneasy, I started to move, my legs were hurting (yes I am not a very flexible person ), then my concentration dropped and went away even sooner. I could only feel my sore legs, and even though I used a pillow from my couch, to sit on or to support ma back, or I used a blanket or even a towel to sit on – this was not solving the problem. Then I made a bit of research and I found out there are specific pillows made just for meditation. No wonder why. I did purchase one, actually a set of two: a zabuton and a zafu.

What is zabuton?

Zabuton is a meditation mat, perfect for all types of meditation and yoga exercises at home.  It is a bigger, square mat, that is comfortable and war.

What is zafu?

Zafu is a round meditation pillow or cushion, that supports your spine correctly. The great thing about a meditation cushion is it is easiest to sit in an upright position, which improves your alertness and the quality of your meditation. And to me – it makes it easier.

Make a nice atmosphere for you

What it helps as well is to make a nice atmosphere. It only takes a second to prepare things, but still, it makes it kind of a part of preparation state for meditation, you can begin to calm down during this stage as well, and the nice setting is going to help to relax as well. What I mean by that is: prepare a nice, clean space to seat, prepare your mat and pillows, or whatever you use, light a candle or two, I like sometimes a scented candle, sometimes I will light incense as well. You can place this on a decorative plate, maybe even add a flower or a piece of nice gemstone. Turn on your favorite meditation music or guided meditation, have a blanket handy, if it is a bit cold, and immerse yourself in a calm, relaxing experience.

Products I use for meditation:

  • I will use a candle that I have handy, sometimes a tea light, sometimes I have a candle, that is very special to me, from a nearby church, or I will light a scented candle. Yankee candle vanilla is my favorite!
  • I light incense – just pick a scent you love. For me, it is always: …… Be sure to put it on a wooden plate or any other plate, so that you won’t burn the floors or furniture.
  • You can even use your favorite etheric oil in a burner. I love the orange, vanilla, or sandalwood scent. Sometimes in the evening, I will use lavender. You can use a diffuser as well, it makes a nice atmosphere if you use the properties of light as well.
  • Choose your favorite meditation music or CD. For me, it is …. or pick something from YouTube. You can find lots of guided meditations as well on CD’s, Audible and YouTube.
  • A nice, comfy blanket, especially in winter.
  • Gemstones that you like.
